#MeToo Campaign

If you are on any form of social media, it is likely you will have seen people posting #MeToo as their status.  It is a phrase which has left me completely split as to whether to partake.  If you don’t know, it is a campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment, following on from the Harvey Weinstein exposure.  First of all I hate the phrase “Me Too”, but that is a side issue.  Secondly, I feel ashamed and don’t really want the world knowing how some low life men have left me feeling.

But that is the point of this whole campaign.  Women do feel ashamed.  They feel they “must have done something to provoke it”.  They feel like they can’t speak out because no one will listen.  Why because it’s so much easier to sweep it under the carpet and pretend it doesn’t happen.

“Cover yourself up more.”  “Don’t go to that place.”  “Oh avoid him.”  and the best one of all was “lie back and think of Britain.”

It makes me feel sick to the pit.  I did put up the “Me Too” status, but within a short space of time removed it, because it made me feel dirty.

I’ve heard some people say “well why didn’t these actresses come forward?”

1. No one listens.

2. It would have been their career which suffered.

3. They more than likely felt scared, ashamed and violated.

4. These predators pick on vulnerable women who they have some sort of control over or a perceivable excuse.  It would be laughed off.

So these cruel, manipulative, power crazy, control freaks continue to wreck lives.

I hope Weinstein is made an example of.  I hope it helps women around the world who are currently suffering sexual abuse or harassment to find someone who will take them seriously.

If you are someone who needs help, please find the courage to reach out.
