Natural Winter Wellness Workshop

As with all the other workshops I have run on my Facebook page, I thought I would share the contents on here.  Finding holistic alternatives to some of the traditional medicines is really important to me.  I hope you find this helpful too.

Winter Wellness

Good evening, for those of you who do not know me, my name is Lisa Ruggles.  I have a husband, five children, two cats, two fish and a tortoise called Boris.  When I am not working in one of the family businesses, I am likely to be out running.

I started Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic in August 2016, as I wanted to save a bit of money on the products I was buying.  My business took off when I started telling people about it – surprise, surprise!  I now love the way it fits around my life and give me another avenue to raise awareness of the charity I am a trustee of, Blue Skye Thinking (a little charity doing big things for children with brain tumours).

care bears

When preparing for tonight, I remembered the Care Bears. As a child, I always wished I could stick out my belly and let my insides radiate into a rainbow.  You’ve probably heard it a thousand times, but what you put in your body, really does show on the outside, almost like the Care Bear’s rainbow.  During the winter months when it’s cold and dark, our bodies often need a little helping hand to keeping us feeling well and to help them fight off bugs.

HEALTH FROM THE INSIDE OUT

supplements-ethics

I would be happy to talk to you about your own needs, but tonight I am going to talk you through a few of my favourites for winter health.

REMEDIES

cold remedies

Feeling poorly?

If you are feeling a bit under the weather right now, you may benefit from our herbal friends.
Scientist at University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy reviewed over a dozen studies on the effects of Echinacea on peoples risk of catching a cold. They found 58% reduction in the chance of catching a cold when taking Echinacea. They also found it reduced the length of a cold by 1.4 days.

We have two products which will help you absorb the benefits of this herb.

NEW Organic Echinacea Plus Tea with Peppermint & Elderflower
Wonderful when you’re feeling under the weather. A refreshing and cooling blend to help ease winter woes, or whenever you feel in need of a boost. Herbal hero echinacea is combined with acerola, rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, and a supporting cast of elderflower, peppermint, yarrow and lime flower.
18 herbal tea sachets come in each box.  More info…

Echinacea Tincture – A versatile tincture to support your immune system
Especially useful during winter, echinacea is a multi-purpose herb; greatly valued by Native Americans for centuries because of its many uses. Make sure you keep it close to hand! I wouldn’t be without it. I take it before I get on a plane too and at the first sign of a sniffle.  More info…

Sore throats and coughs can be treated holistically too. I don’t know about you, I’ve always worried about the chemicals, refined sugar content and colours in traditional medicines.

Honey and Thyme Syrup is a delicious soothing cordial made from a traditional recipe of Honey & Thyme. The honey calms, while the thyme warms. Suitable for adults and children over 12 months.  More info…

Elderberry & Propolis Throat Spray – A naturally soothing and delicious herbal blend made using a traditional recipe of organic honey, elderberries and propolis. Our soothing throat spray helps to support the immune system and is full of natural goodness. Naturally protective, with antiseptic properties, propolis is used by bees to seal and protect their hives. We’ve combined it with antioxidant-rich elderberries and soothing honey – a natural energy booster.  This blend will have you buzzing again in no time!  More info…

DEFENDING ON THE OUTSIDE

What is your skincare like?
Our skin is the body’s largest organ. Anything we put on the skin is absorbed in to the bloodstream in as little as 26 seconds. It does need a little TLC. So how can we look after it?

Exfoliating will rid your skin of all the dead skin cells. You can achieve this with a body polish or scrub, or a Body Brush – Made with natural bristles to gently but effectively exfoliate the skin and stimulate circulation, leaving your skin smooth, free of dead skin cells and receptive to body lotion.
The body brush features a long, removable handle allowing you to reach those difficult to scrub areas.  More info…

You will find after exfoliating, your skin will be much brighter as it will reflect the light. It will also be more receptive to creams and lotions. I have a large range of body butters, lotions and balms for you to choose from. Please speak to me about what would be best for your skin type and lifestyle. My favourite at the moment is the Geranium and Orange Body Balm. It feels and smells amazing.  More info…

Most of our body is covered up in Winter with the exception of our hands and face. Again, even for our hands and face, polishing is key. The skin is shedding dead skin all the time stopping nourishing oils getting through. I will move on to face shortly, but by using a hand polish once a week, you will notice such a difference to the complexion of your hands.

The Melissa hand polish has lemon balm, which is renowned to help with Seasonal Affective Disorder, a very common disorder during the winter months. You can apply the hand polish in circular motions, again stimulating the skin and releasing the essential oils in the polish and rinse off.

You can then protect your hands with a luxurious hand cream – again there is a wide range – including the Melissa hand cream, please ask me about which one would be suitable for your skin type and lifestyle.  More info…

No microbeads

Just a quick note while we are talking about polishes and scrubs – NYRO have never used microbeads in any of their products.

no nasties

Our facial skin care range is amazing. Multi award winning, pioneers in organic, natural skin care. I’m so proud to be a part of the company.

There is a range for every skin type. Although my favourite for nearly all skin types, and a wonderful protector, is Wild Rose Beauty Balm.

It is my go to for everything.

Our award-winning Wild Rose Beauty Balm can be used as a rich cleanser, gentle exfoliant or deeply nourishing balm – to quench areas of dry or dehydrated skin. The exceptionally high levels of wild rosehip oil – a potent antioxidant proven to help repair, firm and smooth the skin – are combined with geranium, starflower, hemp and rosemary oil, to help decongest and enrich the skin, restoring its natural radiance.
Includes a free organic muslin cloth.  More info…

Another favourite is Shea Nut and Rose Hip Lip formula. It is protective, restorative and moisturising. Absolutely amazing all year around. The herbal extracts are very restorative to skin tissue, as are the essential oils. They also have antiseptic and astringent properties, which will help to reduce the possibility of infection if the lips are dry and chapped.  More info…

A cold remedy for your skin…

Eucalyptus Salve is a stimulating, antiseptic and warming rub. Simply rub over the back and chest and enjoy the cleansing vapours. Much, much safer than the high street versions.
Suitable from 7 years old.  More info…

And a defence for your hands when you are out and about, I love the organic defence spray.

Clinically proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria.
Our certified organic hand sanitiser combines a blend of pure essential oils with witch hazel to naturally purify and protect your hands, keeping them clean and fresh.
It’s your gentle yet effective, natural organic alternative to harsh synthetic chemical sprays.
Perfect for cold and flu season, festivals, picnics and everyday use, in a light, family friendly spray.  More info…

DEFENDING AND PROTECTING YOUR HOME

Organic Defence Essential Oil
An amazing all-rounder, Organic Defence is a blend of pure 100% organic essential oils that gives you natural protection against most common bacteria and viruses, and helps support your body’s immune system.

Simply infuse a cloth to cleanse surfaces, inhale to clear sinuses or vaporise in an aroma diffuser to deodorise and purify the air. It’s your all-natural alternative to harsh chemical cleansing sprays and room fresheners.

It has zesty organic lemongrass and purifying niaouli essential oils.  More info…

There are a couple of other essential oils that are popular with defending and protecting you from bugs.

Tea Tree Oil – Natures antibacterial. Can prevent head lice too with the make your own shampoo.

Cleanse Blend
Cleansing and expansive, this is ideal for refreshing a sick room or stuffy office, use in a burner and breathe easy.  Applications: Inhalation, Vaporisation.
Inhalation: Help clear the head and nose with 4-6 drops of essential oil added to a bowl of steaming water. Now place a towel over your head and lean over the bowl – creating a tent effect to trap the steam – and inhale the vapour for a few minutes.
Vaporisation: Essential oils make fantastic natural air fresheners, fragrance a room as well as setting a mood. Simply add a few drops of your chosen essential oils to a vaporiser or burner.

Almost done…

As I said in my opening post, I love my aroma diffuser. They are such a great investment as they are so versatile and effective. A best seller is the Soto, which features chromotherapy too with its multi-coloured mood light. The maintenance free Amaya is also very popular. It has a warm glowing light, which can act as a night night too. Lumie is great for SAD as it has the body clock, which can be set to gentle wake you in the morning.

Don’t forget, if you order a diffuser and essential oil together by 31st January 2017, I will send you the new Neal’s Yard Remedies Essential Oils book for free – worth £16.99
